Girls' soccer preview: Sehome Mariners

SEHOME

MARINERS

Coach: Andria Fountain

Last Year: Finished first in the Class 2A Northwest Conference standings with a league record of 12-1-0. ... Ended season after going 1-1 in the Class 2A State Tournament and finished 19-2-0 overall. ... Rachel Albert, Jessica Bertucci, Madison Heilmann, Teya Mischaikov, Haley Smith and Emily Webster were All-Whatcom County selections.

Players to watch: Rachel Albert (sr., GK); Emily Russell (sr., D); Hanna Tarleton (sr., M); Teya Mischaikov (sr., M/D); Emily Webster (jr., M)

Outlook: The Mariners have had nine months to forget about their stunning defeat in the Class 2A State Quarterfinals, and coach Andria Fountain says they have. Sehome is loaded with talent again, but a deep state run will have to be without the Mariners' top two scorers from a year ago. No Jessica Bertucci and no Madison Heilmann means Sehome will have a new look up top. Fountain expects juniors Marie Kochman and Ashley Mindnich, as well as sophomore Kate Peterson, to manufacture goals from the forward spot. Veteran mids Emily Webster and Hanna Tarleton will benefit Sehome's new-look attack tremendously. "I have a good core leadership group back," Fountain said in a phone interview. "We graduated a few all-conference players, so we'll look a bit different." Seniors Teya Mischaikov, Emily Russell and Rachel Albert are as good as defensive players as a coach could ask for.
