LYNDEN CHRISTIAN
LYNCS
Coach: Brent De Ruyter
Last year: Finished first in the Class 1A Northwest Conference standings with a league record of 7-4-2. ... Ended season after going 0-1 in the Class 1A State Tournament and finished 13-6-2 overall. ... Coryn Bajema was selected All-Whatcom County Player of the Year.
Players to watch: Courtney Hollander (jr., M); Shelby Brown (jr., D); Mikki Jansma (sr., M)
Outlook: Replacing reigning All-Whatcom County Player of the Year Coryn Bajema's 35 goals is not going to be easy, and LC coach Brent De Ruyter realizes this. The solution? The Lyncs still have a number of varsity players who helped make history by reaching the Class 1A State Tournament a season ago. "It's kind of a big-time change in our program," De Ruyter said in a phone interview. "We had eight seniors leave us. We just need to keep that momentum going from last year." Junior mid Courtney Hollander developed into LC's second biggest scoring threat a season ago. She can finish and is great with the ball at her feet. Shelby Brown gives the Lyncs a strong, experienced defender in the back, and De Ruyter is hoping senior mid Mikki Jansma can step up and lead this season. "I think the key will be our balance," De Ruyter said. "The girls understand, to be effective, we have to work together."
