Do you value clean drinking water, abundant wildlife, and quality recreational opportunities close to where you live? Do you trail run, bike, or hike? I do, and these are all reasons I love living here. Well, if you care about these things, join me on Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. at the Whatcom County Council chambers (311 Grand Ave.) to support the Lake Whatcom Forest Preserve. This proposal will protect over 25 percent of your watershed while adding 14 square miles of low-impact recreational opportunities (hiking, biking, etc). And you get this virtually for free. Crosscut stated that councilwoman "Kershner pointed out that the cost of taking the land back from the state will amount to less than $35 an acre." I agree with councilwoman Kershner when she said this is a "good business decision." Please attend the upcoming hearing to thank the council and urge them to continue moving forward with this proposal. Even if you don't speak up publicly, attend the meeting to show you are in favor. Attendance matters! There's likely going to be a loud outcry from the minority that's in opposition to this incredible opportunity. I've heard others are organizing to flood the hearing. You can't let them derail this once-in-a-lifetime chance to improve quality of life for ourselves and future generations! Ensure your voice is heard by attending. If you're unable, email council@co.whatcom.wa.us.
