Conley's five touchdowns lift Golden Eagles in season opener

FERNDALE - Alex Conley rushed for 175 yards and five touchdowns as Ferndale blew out Notre Dame of Vancouver, B.C., 49-21 in a season-opening non-conference game on Friday, Aug. 31.

The game was more of a blowout than the score would suggest as Notre Dame scored two touchdowns in the final two minutes. Ferndale held Notre Dame scoreless until the half, and Golden Eagles head coach Jamie Plenkovich gave credit to the defensive line.

"We did a great job stopping the run early and limiting them," Plenkovich said. "We didn't allow too many big plays either and will continue to get better on the front lines after watching the film."

The Ferndale defense held Notre Dame to three first downs in the first half and 41 total yards.

Conley was able to help spark a Ferndale offense, which scored 14 points in the first half as the Golden Eagles scored 21 points in the third quarter. Conley scored two times in the third quarter along with Cooper Clark, who caught a touchdown.

"We came out a little slow in the first half," Conley said. "But we talked about correcting the little things at half and came out strong and hard."

Conley credited his success on the night to the offensive line.

"There was a lot of doubt about how we would do this year," Conley said. "But we have high expectations for ourselves and it was good to see our offensive line do so well."
