- Several Whatcom County students received college scholarships at the 46th annual Masonic public school recognition program presented by the Masons of the six Whatcom County lodges.
Seventy-four juniors representing all nine public high schools in the county were finalists for the Masonic Scholar-Citizen Award and Scholarship. Winners from each school were selected based on academic achievement, school leadership, community service and short essays.
Saskia Comess from Bellingham High School and Jeremy Brockmann from Meridian High received the top female and male scholarships of $1,500 each.
Scholarships of $500 were awarded to: Elizabeth Berry from Blaine High, Elyse Rybka from Ferndale, Calob Symonds from Lynden, Jenica Barrett from Mount Baker, Lindy Swanson from Nooksack Valley, Kara Junttila from Sehome and Hannah Truong from Squalicum.
Other school winners were Shane Miller from Bellingham, Gordon Kordas from Blaine, Trevor Koehn from Ferndale, Devon Kollmyer from Lynden, Trinell Carpenter from Meridian, Dillon Quintana from Mount Baker, Joseph Luton from Nooksack Valley, Josh Schacht from Sehome and Patrick Gibson from Squalicum.
