Cycling group riding across U.S. to make presentation in Lynden

A free presentation from 30 bicyclists on a cross country trip to support affordable housing will take place at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 26 in Lynden, at Hope Lutheran Church.

The cyclists - members of The Bike and Build group - include Stella Day of Bellingham, who recently graduated from the University of Oregon. Day and other started their 3,757-mile journey June 23 in Portsmouth, N.H. and will finish Tuesday, Aug. 28, in Vancouver, B.C.

Each cyclist raises $4,500 to participate in the cross country ride. Bike and Build has donated more than $3.3 million to affordable housing groups and projects over the past nine years.

A potluck dinner starts at 6 p.m. The dinner will be followed by a presentation at 7 p.m.

COLT .45S LEAD LEAGUE

The Colt .45s are in first place in the adult Borderline Baseball League and have a record of 13-7. The Brewers are second in the standings with an 11-7.5-2 record, and the Cardinals are third with an 11-10 record.

James Seagult has a 6-0 record on the mound with an ERA of 1.88, Jordan Snow leads the league in batting average with a .462 mark and Daniel Vander Kooi is second with an average of .460.

Snow is the league leader in RBI with 28. He's also scored a league-best 23 runs. Steve Chapman leads the league in hits with 33, and Kyle Knudsen is the league leader in extra base hits with 23.

ALLEN PLACES NINTH AT QUALIFIER

Bellingham's Catherine Allen finished ninth at the USGA Senior Women's Amateur Qualifier at Fairwood Golf and Country Club on Thursday, Aug. 16, in Renton.

Allen placed ninth out of 13 golfers and shot an 18-over 89. Only the top three finishers qualified for the USGA Senior Women's Amateur Championship.

BRANIGAN WINS FIRST FLIGHT AT JUNIOR AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

Bellingham golfer Brooke Branigan won the first flight at the 57th Pacific Northwest Junior Amateur Championship at Sunland Golf and Country Club on Thursday, Aug. 16, in Sequim.

Branigan won her match in the quarterfinals, semifinals and ultimately the championship. Branigan's Red Raider teammate, Audrey Orem, won the second flight consolation.

D-BLOCK TAKES FIRST AT TOURNAMENT

Devante Powell, Dedrick Mitchell, Jack West and Trajen Robinson, who together form team D-BLOCK, recently took first place at the Lake Chelan Slam n Jam 3on3 Tournament.

TODD, ZIMMERMAN RECORD HOLE IN ONES

Eric Zimmerman and Terry Todd both recorded hole in ones at Bellingham Golf and Country Club in the last three weeks.

Zimmerman scored his on Aug.1 on hole No. 8, which is a 203-yard Par 3. He used a five iron.

Todd scored his hole in one Aug. 9 on hole No. 13, which is a 140-yard Par 3. He used a seven iron.

BELLINGHAM BASH TRYOUTS COMING SOON

Bellingham Bash Girls Fast pitch team is holding tryouts for their 10U and 12U teams for the 2012-13 season on Saturday, Aug. 25 and Tuesday, Aug. 28, at Frank Geri Fields.

Tryouts for the 10U team on Saturday are from 10 a.m. to noon, and tryouts Saturday for the 12U team are from 1-3 p.m.

DAKOTA CREEK TO HOST BENEFIT

Dakota Creek Golf and County is hosting its first Divot for the Dogs event from 4:30-6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 22.

Suggested donation is $30 and all proceeds go to the Alternative Humane Society of Whatcom County. A cart and hot dog with chili is included with the $30 donation.
