Published: August 17, 2012

Two people were injured after a car hit a motorcycle on Chuckanut Drive Thursday evening, Aug. 16, according to the Washington State Patrol.

Stefan P. Kolbo, 25, of Bellingham, was riding a 2001 Suzuki GSF1200 south on Chuckanut Drive at about 7:25 p.m., when a 2003 Honda Civic made a left turn from Dolphin Place.

The Civic struck the motorcycle near the center line as it was making its way into the northbound lane.

Kolbo and his passenger, 23-year-old Jessica G. Welter, of Blaine, were both taken to St. Joseph hospital. Kolbo was treated and released from the hospital, but Welter remained in serious condition Friday morning, according to a hospital spokeswoman. They were wearing U.S. Department of Transportation-approved helmets at the time of the crash.

The driver of the Civic, 22-year-old Lisa R. Vaughn, of Bellingham, was not injured in the crash.

The cause of the crash is under investigation and it may result in charges. Troopers don't suspect that drugs or alcohol were involved.
