Paragliders and hangliders take to Silver Lake skies Aug. 18

Published: August 16, 2012

The skies above Silver Lake Park will receive a splash of color this weekend as dozens of paragliders and hang gliders take flight for the Black Mountain Fly-In.

Pilots from Canada and the U.S. will start setting up a group campsite at Silver Lake Park Friday night, Aug. 17. The crew plans to take to the skies Saturday around 1 p.m. and fly throughout the afternoon.

While the campground is reserved only for pilots, spectators are welcome to watch Saturday as the pilots partake in a lighthearted competition to see who can land closest to designated markers at the park.

This is the 32nd year pilots will have gathered for the event in some form or another, according to organizer Roger Brock.

The pilots hope the warm weather will provide plenty of thermals - rising air currents that Brock said help the gliders "fly just like the birds."
