Unhappy council won't fight growth board

Published: August 15, 2012

Aug. 7 I saw what had to be the saddest demonstration of representative government, yet, to come to Whatcom County. "Every" single council member agreed that the "Rural Elements" ordinance they were considering was bad legislation.

Some said it had little chance to satisfy the Growth Management board. All knew that it would strip property rights and values from land owners in "our" county. But, the overriding need to get something done, even if it was wrong, held sway. It is something for "all" of us to remember as we approach our county council in the future.

I believe they will choose expediency instead of fighting for our property rights. They will choose expediency instead of defending economic development in the county. They will choose expediency instead of "good planning" that would slow down urban sprawl.
