Kierstin Smith, who earned Evergreen Conference Most Valuable Pitcher honors as a junior and senior at Tumwater High School, has signed a national letter of intent to compete in softball at Western Washington University beginning this fall.
Smith was the Daily Olympian Area Player of the Year last spring, leading Tumwater to a 23-3 record, a second consecutive league championship and the title game at the Class 2A state tournament. She struck out 183 and posted a 1.61 earned run average, while hitting .389 and driving in 31 runs. During one stretch, Smith threw five consecutive shutouts.
As a junior, Smith posted a 17-4 record with 180 strikeouts and a 0.76 ERA. She struck out a personal-best 17 batters against Centralia.
A team co-captain as a junior and senior, Smith was a second-team all-conference choice as a sophomore, hitting six home runs. As a freshman, she played on a team that placed fourth at state.
