Richard, Goebel lead Post 7 AA to state win

Published: July 29, 2012

Matt Richard threw a complete game four-hit shutout, Daniel Goebel hit a fourth inning RBI triple and the Bellingham Post 7 AA Legion baseball team beat North Kitsap 2-0 during the first game of the Double A State Tournament Saturday, July 28, in Anacortes.

Both teams were held scoreless, until Goebel put Post 7 in the scoring column with his RBI triple in the fourth. Bellingham added another run in the top of the fifth, and two runs were more than enough insurance with Richard on the mound.

Richard, who Post 7 coach Jon Christie said hasn't lost a game this season, went the distance and struck out eight along the way.

"We had good pitching, good defense and a timely hit from Goebel," Christie said in a phone interview. "We always know we have a chance to win when (Richard) is on the bump. He's just amazing."

Post 7 faces either Burlington at 6 p.m. or Asotin at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 29, in Anacortes.
