One of the problems with heath care is that the free market is incapable of making health care more accessible or less expensive. I believe the Affordable Care Act, now upheld by the Supreme Court is a necessary first step to improve access to health care. The act provides services to many currently without health insurance. It does away with heinous limits on preexisting conditions.
Costs will continue to increase because the free market and profit-making insurance companies have never been able to decrease costs or increase service availability.
Private insurance company administrative costs average about 15 percent. This is money that is not used to provide health services. Medicare's administrative costs are 3 percent. More money is available for health care through the public program than is available through the for profit programs.
The Republican proposal for Medicare that is supported by Mitt Romeny will provide us with vouchers so that we can shop for health insurance. The result will be an immediate loss of the difference between what it costs to administer Medicare versus what private insurance companies spend. I believe people covered by Medicare will lose if the Republican proposal is implemented.
