Bellingham roommate quarrel over dirty dishes leads to fork in the eye

Published: July 11, 2012

BELLINGHAM - A man upset with his roommate and his roommate's friend for leaving dirty dishes around their apartment threw a fork at the friend, puncturing his left eye, said Bellingham Police spokesman Mark Young.

About 4 p.m. Monday, July 9, Christopher Jacob Gushwa, 18, went outside to confront his roommate and the friend, who had just pulled up to the apartment in the 900 block of North State Street.

While the two were sitting in the truck, Gushwa threw the fork from about five feet away, and it wound up hitting the friend, also 18, in the eye, Young said.

The man needed surgery on his eye and reported the incident to Bellingham police from the hospital Tuesday.

Gushwa was booked into Whatcom County Jail for investigation of third-degree assault Tuesday afternoon.
