BELLINGHAM - A multiple-car crash snarled traffic on Meridian Street Tuesday, July 3, but there were no serious injuries even though one car essentially was demolished, according to the Bellingham Police Department.
The crash occurred about 12:30 p.m. just north of the Horton Road intersection, when an Acura going north on Meridian collided with a convertible Honda going north in the next lane, said L.L. Leake, traffic officer for the Bellingham Police Department.
The impact caused the Acura to cross the center line into the southbound lane, where it hit a GMC truck and continued, hitting the trailer of a southbound semi truck. The Acura was crushed in the crashes; the driver was treated for minor injuries. No one else was injured.
Some witnesses reported that racing may have led to the initial crash, but police could not confirm that. The cause and possible charges were still under investigation.
The southbound lanes of Meridian were closed as Bellingham police and firefighters investigated the scene, and traffic was backed up in both directions for more than an hour after the crash.
