Consistency lifts Sehome to Whatcom County Program of the Year honors

Sehome's Allen Cui cheers as the Sehome "B" team comes in second in the 200 yard medley relay as Sehome beat Anacortes for the Northwest Conference league title at Arne Hanna Aquatic Center on Tuesday Jan. 31, 2012 in Bellingham.

ANDY BRONSON — THE BELLINGHAM HERALD

Sehome may not have brought home the championship trophies with the same regularity that it has in past years, but the Mariners were still the class of Whatcom County during the 2011-12 school year.

Unlike the year before, when Sehome claimed state titles in five sports, the green and gold won only a pair of championships in girls' and boys' swimming this year. But the Mariners finished second in boys' and girls' cross country and girls' track and field and advanced to state in boys' and girls' soccer, softball, volleyball and girls' basketball in addition to having strong showing in a number of other sports.

That type of consistency was enough to lift Sehome to The Bellingham Herald's All-Whatcom County Program of the Year for the third straight year and the sixth time in seven school years.

The award is based on a points system, which awards points to each team for its on-field performance on the Northwest Conference, district and state levels and factors in the number of athletes representing each team on the postseason All-Whatcom County teams. Teams in each sport are then ranked, and the school's ranking in each sport it participates in is averaged.

Sehome's programs ranked, on average, 3.58 on a scale of 11 for the 20 sports it participated in this year (excluding gymnastics, which was not used because only three schools participate in the sport).

Lynden Christian, which won a state title in boys' basketball and had strong showings in a number of other sports, was a close second with an average ranking of 3.79.

Lynden, which nearly completed the state's first "Triple Crown" with titles in football and boys' basketball and a second-place finish in baseball, finished third with an average ranking of 5.55.

Consistency across the board is what made the difference for the Mariners this year.

Sehome ranked first or second in more than half (11) of the 20 sports it competed in and three-quarters (15) of its programs ranked in the top half of the field in their respective sports. No Sehome team ranked last in any sport.

Five Sehome teams ranked in the top 10 for all sports, led by the boys' swim team, which was dominating on its way to a fourth-straight Class 2A state title.

Lynden Christian was equally as impressive, as it ranked first in volleyball, boys' basketball, girls' basketball and boys' golf and was second in girls' soccer.
