Woman dead in mobile home fire in Paradise Lakes area

KENDALL - A woman was killed in a mobile home fire Wednesday morning, June 27, in the 6100 block of Poppy Court in the Paradise Lakes area.

Firefighters arrived about 9:15 a.m. to find heavy smoke and flames shooting from the doublewide home. They made an "aggressive interior attack" because a neighbor believed the lone occupant might still be inside, said Fire District 14 Chief Jerry DeBruin. Soon after the smoke and flames were knocked down, firefighters found a body near the front door.

Whatcom County medical examiner Gary Goldfogel said the victim was a woman who was about 45 years old. Her name was not released Wednesday.

Crime scene investigators were still sifting through debris into Wednesday evening. They had not yet established the cause of the fire, Whatcom County Sheriff Bill Elfo said.

"We have no idea at this time," the sheriff said, when asked if foul play is suspected.

It "could be a while" before more information is released, he added.

DeBruin said the fire appeared to have started in the master bedroom area of the 30-by-70-foot mobile home.

Pets and livestock outside the home were put in custody of the Whatcom Humane Society.
