We have an opportunity here in Washington State to be part of the civil rights struggle of a generation. A generation ago, this nation fought a frantic battle between the retrograde beliefs of bigotry and the belief that each and every citizen of the United States should share the same rights.
This November, we have a chance to be on the right side of history. Referendum 74 is going to be on the ballot, placing the civil rights of a whole group of people up for a public vote. A vote of "no" repeals our recently passed marriage equality law, while a "yes" keeps the law in place.
What will it be, Whatcom County? Which side of history will you choose? If you have children, ask them how they feel about marriage equality. There is a whole generation that will look back on this moment and wonder which path you chose. I hope you will join me in voting yes to a less intrusive government, yes to reinforcing the value of a stable loving relationship, yes to equality, yes to justice, and yes on Referendum 74.
