Says judges need real experience

Published: June 24, 2012

More than two thirds, if not up to 75 percent, of all cases going to trial in our county are criminal filings. This means our next superior court judge must be familiar with the criminal rules of evidence, criminal procedure and trial practice. Dave Grant is the only qualified candidate for Superior Court Judge, Department 2.

His experience as a police officer brings real life law enforcement experience to the judiciary. His experience as a criminal prosecutor and now as District Court judge for the last seven years assures the citizens of this county that he brings the fairness and the know-how of dealing with the extensive criminal trial practice required in superior court.

His experience as a civil prosecutor means he has the aptitude and ability to fairly and superbly rule on the variety of complex legal issues facing Whatcom County residents. Being a lawyer for a long time does not make you qualified to be judge. If someone does not have the criminal trial practice necessary to hear the vast majority of trials heard in this county, that person simply does not have the qualifications to be judge. A person who has led a life and gained the experience that has prepared him for this exact job is the only person qualified for judge. Dave Grant is that person.
