Ferndale infielder Jake Schroeder and Lynden outfielder Luke Christianson have been selected to the Class 3A and Class 2A Washington State Baseball Coaches Association All-State teams, respectively.
Selections were released late Tuesday, June 19.
Schroeder, a graduated senior who has signed to play for Washington State next year, hit .434 (36 for 83) with 24 RBI, eight doubles and a triple this spring. He was a first-team All-Northwest Conference selection as a position player and a first-team All-Whatcom County selection as a pitcher, after he went 5-3 with a 3.30 ERA and 48 strikeouts in 53 innings pitched. He helped the Golden Eagles come within one game of reaching the Class 3A State Tournament this spring.
Christianson, who just completed his junior season, helped the Lions reach the Class 2A state championship game for the first time in the program's history. He quarterbacked a standout Lynden outfield, where he was able to use his blazing speed in center. He also batted leadoff, hitting .314 (27 for 86), scoring 30 runs and stealing 11 bases. He also hit a homer and drew 16 walks. Christianson was a first-team All-Northwest Conference selection and a first-team All-Whatcom County pick.
Ferndale third baseman Austyn Sprague was a second-team pick on the 3A all-state team. As a junior, he hit .342 (25 for 73), scored 21 runs and had 16 RBI and seven doubles.
Lynden placed a pair on the 2A all-state second-team, with pitcher Jordan Kreider and first baseman Matt Meyer honored.
Kreider, a graduated senior, went 10-2 with a 1.98 ERA, including 4-0 during the postseason. He had 61 strikeouts in 67 innings of work. He also hit .294 (25 for 85) with three homers, 17 RBI and 16 runs scored.
Meyer hit .329 (27 for 82) with a homer, 11 RBI and 19 runs scored. He also was a virtual vacuum cleaner at first base with his large frame, great athleticism and surprising flexibility.
Meridian placed a pair of players on the Class 1A/B all-state second-team in pitcher Chase Heslep and infielder Tucker Bronkema.
Heslep, a graduated senior, was outstanding during the final month of the season and finished with a 7-4 record, a 3.67 ERA and 71 strikeouts in 70 2/3 innings of work. He also hit .256 (23 for 90) with 11 RBI and 16 runs scored.
Bronkema batted leadoff for the Trojans as a junior and hit .324 (24 for 74) with 21 runs scored, four doubles and 11 walks and was solid defensively.
Meridian coach Steve Slesk also was selected Co-Coach of the Year in 1A/B along with Cashmere's Jeff Carlson. Despite the graduation of a large, talented senior class after the 2011 season, Slesk led the Trojans to third place in the 1A State Tournament for the third straight year this spring.
Sedro-Woolley's Aaron Stroosma and Mount Vernon's Chris McDowell also represented the Northwest Conference on the Class 3A first-team, while Burlington-Edison's Walker Olis made the 2A first-team.
Kentwood swept the top player and coach awards in 4A, with Reece McGuire Player of the Year and Mark Zender Coach of the Year. Kennewick's Trek Stemp was selected the 3A Player of the Year, while Kamiakin's Ryan Carter was the Coach of the Year. Archbishop Murphy's Levi Mavorhis was the 2A Player of the Year, and White Rivers' Mike Williams is the Coach of the Year. Cashmere's Colton Loomis was the 1A/B Player of the Year.
