Friday qualifies for 1,500 finals at NCAA Championships

University of Oregon junior and Bellingham High alum Becca Friday finished fourth in her preliminary heat of the women’s 1,500 meters on Thursday, June 7, to qualify for the finals at the NCAA Track and Field Championships at Des Moines, Iowa.

Friday finished in 4 minutes, 13.06 seconds, which was the eight-fastest time between the two heats. Stony Brook’s Luc Van Dalen had the top time with a 4:11.69.

The top five finishers in each heat plus the two next fastest athletes earned spots in the final, which will be held at 9:28 a.m. (PDT) on Saturday, June 9.

Missing out on the final were University of San Francisco sophomore Sophie Curl and Oregon State senior Laura Carlyle. Curl, who graduated from Squalicum, had the ninth-fastest time in the first heat and 18th fastest overall in 4:18.63. Carlyle, who ran for Whatcom Community College, was 11th in the second heat and 22nd overall in 4:27.93.

Bellingham High alum Chris Kwiatkowski, who is a senior at Oregon, will compete in the men’s 5,000 meters on Friday, June 8.
