Local golf pro Jeff Coston finished up the Senior PGA Championships with a 67 for a four-day 291 Sunday, May 27, at The Golf Club at Harbor Shores in Benton Harbor, Mich.
Coston enjoyed his best round of the tournament and finished 7-over for the tournament. He shot a 76 on day one, a 71 on day two, and a 77 on day three.
Coston said he has been involved in a number of golf competitions in the last week, and that the Senior PGA Championships capped a busy week of golf.
"I shot a 67 today, and I had a crazy week," Coston said in a phone interview. "I got to spend time with some old friends like Freddie Couples and Tom Lehman. I was glad to make the cut and play on into the weekend."
While Coston spent the last four days focusing on his game, he also reunited with a woman he made a large impact on during his younger playing days on the PGA Tour.
"When I was in my first year on the tour in 1986, I went out to a golf event and a Dad introduced me to this young girl. She was 13 at the time, and I got to work with her for a few years. Then she got on to the LPGA tour. She called me, and she lives in Saint Joes. Mich. I got to see her today, and she just really thanked me and told me that I had a great impact on her life, and that she would never be the golfer or mom she is today of we wouldn't have spent that time together."
Coston said it was an extremely touching moment for him. He said he is heading back to the northwest to teach at Semiahmoo first thing the morning of Tuesday, May 29.
