Trojans season ends after opening round of state tournament

RICHLAND - The Meridian softball team made an inspirational run through the Class 1A Tri-District Tournament to clinch a state berth - despite winning only two Northwest Conference games in the regular season - but that run came to a quick stop.

Meridian allowed at least 20 runs in each of its two games in the Class 1A State Tournament on Friday, May 25, at Columbia Playfield in Richland and saw its season come to a close.

The Trojans fell 21-8 its opening round game against Connell and traveled to the consolation bracket to face Montesano. Meridian lost 20-2 and was eliminated from the tournament.

While the Trojans season ended on the opening day of the state tournament, it certainly turned its season into a memorable one with three wins in the tri-district tournament to reach state after losing four out of five games to end the regular season and after starting is season with a 2-5 record.

Meridian coach Tony Johnson could not be reached after games.

The Trojans finished their season at 12-17 overall and were 2-11 in the Northwest Conference.
