TACOMA - For the Meridian and Nooksack Valley wrestlers at Friday's Mat Classic XXIV, day one of state served as a learning experience.
Out of the 10 Class 1A wrestlers, with an exception to Meridian's James Reedy-Capp, whose third round consolation match result was not posted by press time, Nooksack Valley's Tanner Klemann was the lone 1A wrestler to make it to Saturday's medal rounds.
"As a team, I would say that we are very young," Nooksack Valley coach Chad Parson said. "With a lot of freshmen and sophomores, we are going to use this as a learning experience that will help us get ready for next year."
Klemann, who beat Forks' Javier Contreras in the first round with a pin, lost to Highland's Andres Tereza in the second round in a devastating 9-7 overtime loss.
Contreras shot at Klemann and was able to bring him down and gain top position, as just about all of the Nooksack Valley sophomore's body fell out of the wrestling circle. The referee signaled a two-point takedown and a Highland win, despite a debate from Parson.
Klemann rebounded from the loss with a pin in the third period against Royal's Carlos Hernandez in his consolation match up.
The rest of the Pioneers' squad wasn't as lucky as Klemann.
Michael Kipling (106) went two and out ending his tournament. Taylor Gardner (113) lost his first match, won his second then lost his third to end his tournament. Hunter Whittern (126) went two and out. Tyler Warner (152) went two and out. Jesse O'Bryan (160) won his first then lost his last two and Nick Bourassa (285) went two and out.
Meridian's J.J. Hansen (138) lost his first match, rebounded to win his second then lost his third and Troy Rathjen (120) won his first match then lost his last two to end his state experience.
"I think they wrestled in matches they could get," Meridian coach Roger Goodwin said.
