SEATTLE - A semi truck hauling eggs south from Bellingham crashed through a guardrail and landed 20 feet below on a freeway onramp Tuesday morning, Feb. 14, after it was struck by an out-of-control Ford Mustang, according to Washington State Patrol.
The driver of the 1996 Ford Mustang, Elizabeth M. Hardesty, 19, lost control of the car about 11:10 a.m. in the right lane of southbound Interstate 5, near Ravenna Boulevard in Seattle, according to state patrol.
The Mustang crossed three empty lanes of traffic before it struck a Ludtke Pacific semi truck driven by A. Clifford Tumlison, 61, of Maple Falls. His truck was hauling eggs that were ultimately going to be exported to Hong Kong, said Lex Ludtke, of Ludtke Pacific Trucking.
The semi twisted around and rolled over the guardrail, landing upside down about 20 feet below on a freeway onramp, said Trooper Julie Startup. Tumlison was released Tuesday afternoon from Harborview Medical Center with minor injuries.
"It was like a 15- or 20-foot drop," Ludtke said. "I'm more than little bit sure he's going to be a bit creaky in the morning, but he's OK."
Hardesty and two 22-year-old men in the Mustang also were taken to Harborview Medical Center with minor injuries, Startup said. All four people were wearing seatbelts.
Southbound traffic in the area was stalled for more than an hour while state Department of Transportation crews cleaned up spilled fuel and broken eggs from the scene.
The cause of the crash was still under investigation Tuesday. Charges were pending.
