BELLINGHAM - A two-car broadside crash in north Bellingham sent one woman to the hospital Saturday evening, Feb. 11.

A Mitsubishi Montero was travelling eastbound about 5:45 p.m. on West Kellogg Road, near Century Fresh Flowers, when its driver started to make a left turn into the parking lot of Best Buy, said Bellingham Police Sgt. David Richards.

A Volkswagen Jetta was trailing another vehicle headed in the opposite direction. The driver of the Jetta couldn't see the Montero because of the other vehicle, Richards said, and as the Jetta switched lanes it broadsided the turning SUV. The Montero was sent spinning into a nearby embankment. The front end of the Jetta was crumpled and shot off sparks from its battery.

The passenger in the Montero, a woman in her 40s, was taken to St. Joseph hospital by ambulance. No update on her condition was available as of Saturday.

The driver of the Montero was not badly hurt, and the two people in the Jetta were bruised but did not need to be taken to the hospital, Richards said.

Officers on the scene said it was hard to say how fast the vehicles were traveling. Police did not suspect alcohol was involved, Richards said.
