The Sehome boys' swimming team has set itself up nicely for the Class 2A Northwest District finals.

The Mariners recorded 19 times worthy of advancing to the finals after its strong overall performance in the preliminary round Friday, Feb. 10, at Fidalgo Pool in Anacortes.

Sehome dominated the 200 individual medley as it took four of the top five places. Cole Avery placed first with a time of 2 minutes, 2.04 seconds, Andy Small was second at 2:08.67, Allen Cui took fourth at 2:11.00 and Isaiah Grambo was fifth at 2:12.76.

Anacortes had 17 times good enough for the finals, Squalicum had nine, Lynden had seven and Bellingham had two.

The Mariners will have to fend off Anacortes if they hope to claim the district crown Saturday.

"It looks like it's going to be a head to head battle between us and Anacortes," Sehome coach Don Helling said in a phone interview. "It will be a fast meet tomorrow."

It wasn't all just Sehome though. Squalicum's Gus Evans placed first in the 100 breaststroke at 1:02.37, edging Sehome's Patrick Gregory by 0.03 seconds.

Lynden's Moses Kim placed second in the 100 butterfly at 57.43. Alec Barnard of Archbishop Murphy took first at 53.25.

Avery also took first in the 100 backstroke, Casey Klipsch placed first in the 100 freestyle and Gregory took the 50 freestyle. Sehome's 200 freestyle relay team took first as well.

The district finals start at 2:45 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, at Fidalgo Pool.
