Our state government continues to allocate fewer resources to public education requiring local school districts to make up the difference.
With the expiration of the current levy, this equals roughly 25 percent of the Ferndale School District's operating budget. These funds pay for essential learning services including: classroom teachers, support staff, enrichment specialists, music and athletic programs, and transportation.
Currently, I am responsible for the academic and social development of 28 nine- and 10-year-olds. While I presently consider it a healthy challenge to meet the needs of every student, a 25 percent increase in class size would be overwhelming. It would be impossible to meet the diverse needs of 35 learners. One teacher cannot ensure the learning of such a large group of individuals with varying academic and social needs.
Our students deserve a strong and rigorous educational program. Continuing to keep class sizes manageable will make it possible for teachers to provide learning opportunities to help each student reach his or her potential.
Please continue to support the educational needs of the Ferndale community and vote "yes" on the replacement levy on Feb. 14.
