Dan Bartle would have been just a couple of weeks into his senior year at Ferndale when the terrorist attacks occurred on Sept. 11, 2001. On the Saturday following the attacks there was a gathering at Ferndale High School, memorializing the victims of the attacks.
I remember sitting in the stands during that service, wondering what the future held for the young men and women of this country. What price would they be asked to pay for our country? There were many teenagers at that memorial service and I prayed that none of them would have to pay the ultimate price for our freedom and safety.
I didn't know Mr. Bartle but it would not surprise me to learn he had been there that Saturday. From what I've read he seems like the type of man who would have taken the time to honor others. He may have wondered the same things as I, may have even asked himself the same question "What does my future hold?"
We now know the price he paid, willingly and with honor.
To Mr. Bartle's family, I wish you peace, and may you know how much this community appreciates the sacrifice this young man gave. He will be remembered with honor and with pride.
