The Whatcom Warriors peewee hockey team won the Winter Classic tournament in Moses Lake on Jan. 28-29.
The Warriors, a team of hockey players ages 11 and 12, won four straight games and outscored their opponents 40 to 5, including a 12-5 victory over Spokane in the championship.
Whatcom won its first three games against Moses Lake, Tri-Cities and Winthrop and did not allow a goal in any game.
The team was led by the goaltending of Justin Hutchings who had three shutouts and Simeon Smith who had 12 goals and five assists.
Team players are Simeon Smith, Matti Toivola, Sydney Lee, Allison Reeb, Daniel Bergeron, Shane Lynette and Kayvon Tari from Bellingham; Bretton Chitwood and Eli Gripp from Lynden; and Justin Hutchings from Blaine.
The team is coached by Kari Toivola and Dave Bergeron.
LYNDEN BASKETBALL TEAM WINS TOURNEY
The Lynden eighth-grade boys' basketball team went undefeated at the 15th annual Dylan Crayton Memorial basketball tournament last weekend.
Lynden started with wins over Cedar Park 65-16 and Mill Creek 51-26. In the title game Lynden beat Vancouver Drive 51-26 to improve to 37-4 on the season.
Lynden players are Alex Crabtree, Nathanial Fleishman, Noah King, Caden Lair, Jensen Mayberry, Dalton Ohligschlager, Jake Poag, Blake Sandland, Sterling Somers, Taiji VanDalen and Jordan Witten-berg. Lynden is coached by Steve Somers and Rick Lair.
RAPIDS EARN HOME VICTORY
The WSA Rapids indoor soccer team beat Snohomish 6-4 on Saturday, Feb. 5, at the Sportsplex.
The Rapids (5-1-1) were up by 5-1 in the game and held on for the victory. The Rapids were led by Scott Swanson with two goals and Brendan Quilici with a goal and assist.
Oscar Jimenez, Greg Young and Matt Fishbaugher each scored a goal in the victory.
The Rapids secured a first-round playoff game in the Northwest Divisional PASL playoffs which will be at 7:15 p.m. Feb. 18, at the Sportsplex.
D-BLOCK HOOPS WINS FERNDALE TOURNEY
The D-Block Hoops basketball team won the 2012 Dylan Crayton Ferndale Tournament.
D-Block Hoops beat Ferndale in the championship game. High scorers were Noah Westerhoff with 20 points, Damek Mitchell with 19 points and 19 rebounds and Darious Powell with 15 points.
D-Block AAU seventh-grade boys' basketball team will have spring tryouts at the end of February. For more information contact coach Reggie at 360-510-7411.
RUN FOR THE HONEYWAGON IN EARLY MARCH
The 30th annual Run for the Honeywagon will be Saturday, March 3, at Nooksack Valley Middle School in Everson.
Registration on race day is 8:30 to 9:45 a.m. Start times are 9 a.m. for the half-marathon walkers, 9:45 a.m. for the kid's half-mile fun run, 10 a.m. for the half-marathon and four-mile races.
Cost is $10 for the half-marathon, $8 for the four-mile race and club members are free.

RUNNING SERIES STARTS FEB. 12
The new Bellingham Trail Running Series is a series of challenging short to mid-distance trail running races in and around Bellingham.
The races vary from two miles to 25K in distance and runners earn points in three out of the six races. Runners with the most points in their age divisions and overall win awards at the series finale race on July 29.
The first race in the series is the Fragrance Lake 10K/20K on Feb. 12.
