Ferndale got five wrestlers through the Class 3A Northwest District Tournament, including 220-pound champion Kam Williams, who won the championship match with a first-round pin.
"Kam got seeded No. 1, and he came in with a lot of confidence, and he kept wrestling hard," Golden Eagles coach Caleb Schlack said in a phone interview. "He was working smart today, just like he did last year, and that really helped him. ... He was just a beast."
Isaac Robison also made it through the championship match at 120 pounds, but ending up losing a close decision to Shorewood's Matt Floresca.
Ferndale will send a pair of wrestlers through at 182 pounds, as Sam Alexander and Klinton Maassen finished third and fourth, respectively.
"It was exciting to see," Schlack said. "Sam put himself in position to get into the final until he made a rookie mistake, but he was still able to go on. Klinton wrestled the tournament of his life. For a second-year wrestler, moving on is pretty exciting for him."
Erik Engels also finished fifth at 152 pounds, despite a difficult seed. He lost to the No. 2 seed early, but came back to beat him the fifth-place match to advance.
The five wrestlers advance to the 3A regional tournament on Saturday, Feb. 11, at Skyline.
"I was hoping we'd take more than five, but we're a pretty young team and we made some young mistakes," Schlack said. "Hopefully we'll learn from that and bring more next year."
