PREP WRESTLING: Pioneers have great showing at sub regionals

All season Meridian coach Roger Goodwin has watched all five of his Trojan wrestlers battle whatever opponents are thrown at them.

And on Saturday, Feb. 4, at Squalicum High School, Goodwin watched all five of his wrestlers qualify all for the Class 1A Regional Tournament.

Jack Hallmark (132), JJ Hansen (138) and James Reedy-Capp (195) all won their individual weight classes, while Zack Gray (145) and Troy Rathjen (120) placed second.

"I thought Jack really stood out today," Goodwin said. "He had two or three key wins and took control from start to finish."

While Meridian qualified all of its wrestlers, it was Nooksack Valley who dominated the tournament. The Pioneers recorded 230 points, while second-place Bellevue Christian came in second with 169.5 points. The Trojans finished fourth with 99 points.

Nooksack Valley's Michael Kipling (106), Taylor Gardner (113), Tanner Klemann (120), Hunter Whittern (126), Tyler Warner (152) Jesse O'Bryan (160), Austin Poor (170) and Blake Hammond (182) all won their individual weight classes.

"Today was good," Klemann said. "I got two matches in, and I pinned the first guy and I pinned the second guy in the second round."

Next for all the Nooksack Valley and Meridian qualifiers is the Class 1A Regional Tournament at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, at Bellevue Christian High School.
