PREP BASKETBALL: Squalicum overtakes Lynden for No. 1 spot in boys' poll

Posted: 12:01am on Feb 1, 2012; Modified: 10:22pm on Feb 1, 2012

After hovering around the No. 1 ranking in the Washington State AP Top 10 Class 2A boys' basketball poll the past few weeks, Squalicum jumped from its previous No. 3 position to claim the top spot in the AP poll this week as rankings were released Wednesday, Feb. 2.

The Storm (15-2, 8-2 GNAC) beat the Lions (14-3, 9-1 NWC), who dropped from their No. 1 ranking to No. 2, 64-60 on Wednesday, Jan. 25. Although Squalicum received just one more point than Lynden in the weekly poll, the Lions received four first-place votes to the Storm's three first-place votes.

Sehome (13-4, 8-2 NWC), which lost to Lynden Christian 68-54 on Friday, Jan. 27, fell out of the top 10 but received nine votes. The only other Class 2A Northwest Conference team earning top 10 consideration was Anacortes (13-3, 9-2 NWC), which received three votes.

Lynden Christian (15-2, 8-2 NWC), which has won 12 of its last 13 games, improved its No. 6 ranking in last week's poll to No. 4 in this week's top 10. There were no Class 3A NWC teams that appeared in the AP Top 10 poll.

Quite a bit of movement existed on the girls' side this week. Both Lynden (12-6, 7-4 NWC), which was ranked No. 6 last week, and Sehome (13-4, 8-2 NWC), which was ranked No. 9 last week, dropped out of the top 10. The Mariners received six votes, while the Lions received four votes. Anacortes, which did not receive any consideration last week, earned three votes this week.

The big mover in Class 2A NWC girls' basketball is Blaine. The Borderites (13-4, 8-2 NWC), who had just one vote last week, moved to the No. 8 spot this week. Burlington-Edison (15-2, 9-1 NWC), which currently sits atop the NWC standings, improved its No. 4 ranking in last week's poll to No. 3 this week. Anacortes (10-7, 7-3 NWC) received three votes this week but did not crack the top 10.

No Class 3A NWC teams received any top 10 consideration, and in Class 1A play Lynden Christian (10-8, 6-5 NWC) received a single vote.
