The Lummi boys' basketball team's starting backcourt was held scoreless, but a huge fourth quarter propelled the Blackhawks to a 42-34 victory at Lopez on Tuesday, Jan. 31.

Lummi (11-5, 8-3) outscored Lopez 15-2 in the final quarter. Its starting backcourt of Earl Johnson, Logan Toby and Joe Brady were marked throughout the game by Lopez' defense, but other players stepped up in their spots to secure the win.

But just as they were held without a field goal, so was the entire Lopez team in the fourth quarter. Its two points came on a pair of free throws.

"They did a good job of defending our starting guards, but going into the fourth quarter we just buckled down defensively," Lummi coach Jerome Toby said in a phone interview. "Our hustle and defensive play in the fourth quarter was the difference tonight."

Jared Tom led Lummi with 12 points and Jordan Deardorff scored 9.

Lummi next hosts Tulalip Heritage at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 3.
