The Whatcom Community College men's basketball team saw its nine-game winning streak come to a halt as it lost on the road against Seattle Community College 70-62 on Saturday, Jan. 28, for its first NWAACC North Division loss of the season.
The Orcas came in playing their best basketball of the season. They just toppled No. 1 Bellevue College on Jan. 23 and beat No. 3 Peninsula on Jan. 11.
But Whatcom coach Chris Scrimsher said in a phone interview his team didn't come out with the same intensity as it had throughout its run to the top of the North Division.
"We got outworked," Scrimsher said. "They outrebounded by quite a few and in the second half they outrebounded us by 16. That rebounding is an indication of our hustle tonight."
The Orcas were outrebounded 52-36 for the game after they had come in as the fourth best rebounding team in the NWAACC (43.6 per game).
"We weren't ready to play," Scrimsher said. "We didn't have the right attitude and you could tell from how the pace was dictated the first two minutes. (Seattle) did a good job of dribbling and attacking the basket and we couldn't stop penetration."
Will Perry and Zach Stalin each scored 13 points for Whatcom, while Derek Dickerson and Patrick Voeut each had 10.
