BELLINGHAM - The public is invited to line streets of the motorcade route Saturday afternoon, Jan. 28, to honor a Ferndale man who died in Afghanistan last week.

A procession for Capt. Daniel B. Bartle, 27, who died in a helicopter crash, is tentatively scheduled to start about 1 p.m. Saturday, when his body is expected to arrive at Bellingham International Airport.

From there the procession will move south to the Interstate 5 Bakerview onramp and leave the freeway at the Northwest Avenue exit. The motorcade will move down Northwest Avenue until it changes to Elm Street and then turn right onto Broadway, ending at Westford Funeral Home, 1301 Broadway.

Gov. Chris Gregoire has ordered all flags on state agency buildings to be lowered to half-staff Tuesday, Jan. 31, to honor Bartle, a helicopter pilot in the Marines who graduated valedictorian from Ferndale High School in 2002. His helicopter crashed Jan. 19 in the Helmand province, leaving six Marines dead.

Flags on Whatcom County buildings had previously been ordered to half-staff through Monday evening for Bartle.

FERNDALE — A U.S. Marine from Ferndale was among six Marines killed in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan, the Defense Department announced Saturday, Jan. 21.

Capt. Daniel B. Bartle died Thursday, Jan. 19, in a crash in the Helmand province. He was 27.

Bartle, who graduated as a valedictorian from Ferndale High School in 2002, had been decorated with two Air Medals and a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, among other awards. This was his second deployment to Afghanistan.

BELLINGHAM - Strangers, friends and veterans lined the streets of Bellingham on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 28, to honor a soldier coming home for the last time.

U.S. Marine Capt. Daniel B. Bartle, 27, of Ferndale died Jan. 19 when his helicopter crashed in the Helmand province of Afghanistan. Five other Marines were also killed in the crash.

Bartle graduated as a valedictorian from Ferndale High School in 2002. He is survived by his father, mother, brother and sister.

FERNDALE - Ten years ago Capt. Daniel Benjamin Bartle graduated from Ferndale High School: He was the class valedictorian, described as a bright but humble young man who would go on to see the world from a helicopter cockpit.

Mourners packed the high school's auditorium to capacity Sunday, Jan. 29, in a public ceremony honoring the fallen Marine, who was killed with five fellow servicemen when his helicopter crashed in the Helmand province of Afghanistan.

At Sunday's ceremony, a crowd of hundreds listened to family, teachers, classmates and brothers in arms speak about a man described again and again as strong, brave and, above all, selfless.
