Despite still dealing with two ailing shoulders, Jeremy Korthuis pinned his opponent in 39 seconds to lead Lynden to a 36-33 victory against visiting Nooksack Valley in a Northwest Conference match on Wednesday, Jan. 25, in his first match in three weeks.
Lynden coach Randy Anderson said in a phone interview Korthuis wasn't supposed to compete, but the Lions didn't have anyone else to compete in the 195-pound weight class and would have suffered a forfeit if he hadn't stepped in.
Anderson said he told Korthuis not to risk the rest of his season by injuring himself further, but Korthuis' confidence convinced him otherwise. He quickly pinned Nooksack Valley's Blake Hammond to give Lynden the points it needed to win the match.
"He chose to go out there and he was a stud," Anderson said. "He really took over tonight. He has two bad shoulders and he still went out there. I'm thoroughly impressed with his commitment."
The fastest pin came from Nooksack Valley's Michael Kipling, who defeated Lucas Fakkema in 31 seconds.
Lynden won five matches to Nooksack Valley's four.
