Moses Kim took first place in the 50 freestyle and the 100 butterfly as the Lynden boys' swimming team overcame the lack of starting blocks at the Skagit Valley YMCA to defeat both Burlington-Edison and Sedro-Woolley in Northwest Conference action on Tuesday, Jan. 24.
Lynden had little trouble swimming past the two schools as they beat Burlington-Edison 120-45 and Sedro-Woolley 115-46.
Kim finished the 50 freestyle in 24.9 seconds and took the 100 butterfly in 1:01.2. They weren't his best times because the pool is without starting blocks, which forced the swimmers to start in the water, but Lynden coach Steve Gibb said in a phone interview he was pleased with his sprints.
"It's a tough pool, and all things considered we did well," Gibb said. "We had a couple more district times, but we're a little tired getting ready to go into the postseason."
Giovanni Galarza won the 500 freestyle in 6:15.9, while Jeffrey Propersi won the 100 backstroke in 1:08.3. Jan Wolfisberg placed first in the 100 breaststroke in 1:16.4. Lynden won both the 200 freestyle relay and the 400 freestyle relay.
The Lions head to Fidalgo Pool next at 2:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26, to face Anacortes. The pool is also where the Class 2A District Meet will be held, allowing Lynden to get a feel before it before the postseason starts.
