Whatcom Community College women's basketball coach Sara Bergner said in a phone interview she told her team it would need to defend and rebound if it was going to knock off unbeaten Skagit Valley.
Instead, the Orcas allowed a season-high 91 points and collected 25 rebounds.
Skagit Valley cruised past Whatcom 91-52 in an NWAACC North Division game on Saturday, Jan. 21, as it outrebounded the Orcas 45-25.
"We gave up too many points and outrebounded us by 20," Bergner said. "That really hurt us. They shot excellent tonight, but we could have done a better job of defending."
Brittany Gray led Skagit (9-5, 6-0) with 24 points and 11 rebounds, while Jessica Denmon scored 16 points. Skagit shot 36-for-51 from the field.
Alexis Wolf scored 12 points for Whatcom (8-7, 3-2) and Erika Locker had 10. The Orcas made 18 percent of their shots in the first half and finished 19-for-59.
Whatcom next plays at Bellevue at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 23.
