Whatcom homeless count needs volunteers

Posted: 2:01pm on Jan 21, 2012

The Whatcom County Health Department is asking for volunteers to help with the annual count of Whatcom County's homeless, happening Thursday, Jan. 26.

Volunteers will be asked to conduct basic surveys of homeless people in the late afternoon and early evening at meal programs, missions or drop-in centers. No street or camp outreach will be required.

Training will be provided. Volunteers must be 18 or older and able to interact productively with homeless people, said Health Department housing specialist Gail de Hoog.

This "point-in-time" count enables agencies in the county to better plan their services, and qualify for state and federal funds.

To inquire, call de Hoog at 360-676-6724, ext. 30693.
