BELLINGHAM -- A vehicle lost control and slammed into a Whatcom Transportation Authority bus, totaling the car and damaging the bus Friday morning, Jan. 20.

No injuries were reported.

At about 6:50 a.m., a Toyota Land Cruiser was heading in the opposite direction of a WTA bus on Lakeway Drive near Oriental Street when the Toyota driver lost control and the vehicle spun around. It smashed into the front-driver’s side of the bus, breaking the bus windshield, destroying the bike rack and crumpling the bus bumper.

The Land Cruiser then swung around again and crashed into the middle of the bus, popped out several emergency windows and caused significant damage to the side of the bus, said WTA spokeswoman Maureen McCarthy.

The Landcruiser was totaled. Its driver was cited for going too fast for conditions.

The damaged bus was towed from the scene and another bus was brought in to collect the passengers.
