REC NOTEBOOK: Squalicum runner Patrick Gibson runs fastest 3,000-meter time in country

Squalicum junior and Whatcom Tesseract runner Patrick Gibson ran the fastest time in the United States this year for the 3,000-meter run on Saturday, Jan. 14, clocking in at 8 minutes, 45.54 seconds at the UW Indoor Preview Meet in Seattle.

Also representing Whatcom Tesseract at the meet were: Brittany Gappa in the 1-mile run 5:12.65 which is the 44th best time in the country and tops in Washington; and Mimi Meggison in the 3,000-meter run in 10:25.05. Although Meggison is in eighth grade, her time would be the 25th time in the country and No. 1 time in Washington.

TWO HOCKEY PLAYERS SELECTED FOR TOURNAMENT

Two Whatcom County hockey players, Treven Salminen and Kristjan Toivola, have been selected to play in the Pacific Coast Amateur Hockey Association annual Midget Scholarship Tournament.

Four teams of 17 players are selected from 32 associations from Seattle, Greater Vancouver and Fraser Valley areas to promote the ideals of scholastic achievement and sportsmanship combined with participation in minor hockey at the midget level.

Both players play on the Whatcom Warriors Midget A1 team and are the only players in Whatcom County to have been selected for this tournament. Treven and Kristjan had to beat many talented players during a two-day tryout to earn a spot on the team.

This year's tournament will be held Jan. 15 to 21.

CHUCKANUT BAY RUGBY CLUB

The Chuckanut Bay Rugby season starts in February and the team is looking for players.

Anyone can sign up to play at the WECU Meeting Room on Holly Street at 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 16. Tryouts for the sport before signing up youths age 13-18 are Tuesday, Jan. 17, and Thursday, Jan. 19 at Whatcom Community College on the Lighted Sportsfield at 6:30 p.m. Coaching in basic skills and an introduction to the sport will be provided. Players can come both or either of those days.

D-BLOCK HOOPS ON A ROLL

The D-Block Hoops AAU seventh-grade boys' basketball team won the Seattle Winter Jam on Jan. 7-8.

D-Block's record is 27-4 and the team is on a 26-game win streak.

BASEBALL DINNER AND AUCTION

The 2012 dinner and auction to benefit the Bellingham Youth Baseball and Post 7 organiztion will be Saturday, Feb. 4, at the Northwood Hall.

The event will raise funds for players age 13 to 19 with a live and silent auction.
