TOPPENISH — A man lied when he claimed he was the victim of a drive-by shooting in Toppenish earlier this week, police said.

Investigators discovered the 25-year-old Zillah man’s gunshot wound to the leg was actually a self-inflicted accident, according to a news release issued Saturday by the Toppenish Police Department.

On Wednesday the man told police he was walking in the 200 block of Bolin Drive when someone in a red Honda fired at him twice, hitting him once in the leg.

Police now say that was a lie and that they are investigating the unnamed man for possible charges of false reporting.

The wound was not life-threatening and the man has since been released from the hospital.

Police said they would have no further comment on the case this weekend.
