BELLINGHAM - A Bellingham police officer suffered a possible broken leg during a motorcycle crash Wednesday morning, Jan. 11, at a downtown Bellingham intersection.

Scott Stewart, a nine-year veteran of the department on duty at the time, was turning left from Champion Street onto Grand Avenue when he lost control of his police motorcycle, witnesses said. No other vehicles were involved.

A fresh puddle of oil was found at the scene and is believed to have been a factor in the accident, said police spokesman Mark Young.

Stewart, a traffic officer, was driving the 2008 BMW1200 RT motorcycle back to the police station at 505 Grand Ave. He was taken by ambulance to St. Joseph hospital.
