Where: Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery
What: Participants get the chance to explore on snowshoes the Icicle Trail at the hatchery. No experience is necessary to take part. The treks are sponsored by Friends of Northwest Hatcheries.
Equipment: Snowshoes are provided; participants must be prepared with warm clothing and winter boots.
Age limits: For ages 8 and up.
Cost: Free
Group limits: Groups are limited to 12 people. Reservations are limited to six people per family or party.
Tour the hatchery: Visitors also can tour the hatchery. The visitor center is open through March 31, Mondays-Fridays from 8 a.m-4 p.m. and weekends and holidays 8 a.m.-2 p.m. The hatchery is closed today and New Years Day. Tours to the public are self-guided. You are invited to talk to the hatchery staff, learn about fish species raised, and see thousands of young salmon in raceways and ponds.
Getting there: Travel to the west end of Leavenworth on U.S. 2, and turn south onto Icicle Road for a two-mile drive to the hatchery. Follow the signs that take you left down Fish Hatchery Road, past Hatchery Park and into the main parking lot and visitor center area.
