HIKING

Start the New Year at Eagle Island State Park

The public is invited on Jan. 1 from 1 to 3 p.m. to participate in a free hike through the park.

“What better way to cure cabin fever and burn off those extra holiday calories by starting off the New Year with an invigorating walk in Eagle Island State Park, right here in the heart of the Treasure Valley,” said Nancy Merrill, director of Idaho’s Department of State Parks and Recreation.

The hike will be about 2 miles long and suitable for people of all ages and abilities. Park staff will provide a bonfire, hot chocolate and potato soup.

The hike is part of a national effort to get people outside and recreating in their state parks during winter. The 2012 New Year’s Day event is sponsored by America’s State Parks and marks the first time all 50 states will join together to sponsor First Day Hikes in their state parks.

SKIING

REI to host free ski/snowboard waxing clinic

The clinic will run from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Jan. 4 at 8300 W. Emerald St. on Boise.

This class will focus on the basics of waxing, including base preparation, structure, major and minor repair, and stone grinding. REI’s expert technician will also go into an in-depth examination of how and why waxes work.
