The Whatcom men's basketball team braved a 41-28 hole in the first half and two overtimes to beat Highline Community College 85-84 Thursday, Dec. 1, at HCC.
In the dwindling moments of the second overtime, Whatcom Community College basketball coach Chris Scrimsher drew up a play for the Orcas, who found Pat Voeut streaking to the basket.
Voeut scored to tie the game at 84-84 and got fouled in the process. Voeut, who scored a team-high 20 points, grabbed eight boards added seven assists and sunk his free throw with 0.4 seconds remaining on the clock to give WCC a dramatic win.
"We got off to a slow start but wanted to slowly chip away," Scrimsher said in a phone interview. "It was great. The kids played hard all the way through the second half."
WCC snagged 17 steals en route to an impressive defensive performance.
Evan Coulter scored 15 points, grabbed seven rebounds and added three assists. Derek Dickerson scored 14 points, had three rebounds and made five steals. Will Perry scored 17 points, had four assists, six boards and a steal.
