Rivers should be a good option this weekend, as long as there isn’t too much more rain. Stream flows are dropping back to the levels they were at before the rain, which means that fish should be moving upstream. There are some good reports from saltwater areas, even in Tacoma. Lake fishing has really slowed down.
RIVERS
Green: The fishing has been slowed by high water, but conditions should improve through the weekend.
Humptulips: People are catching coho and a few last chinook. The fish are spread throughout the river.
Minter: The rain seems to have brought more fish to the creek. People are catching plenty of chum, and there are plenty of people fishing there.
Nisqually: High and off-color water has brought fishing to a standstill.
Olympic Coast: The rivers are still on the high side, especially the Hoh. But if the rain holds off, the rivers should be good destinations for steelhead, said Jim Kerr of Rain Coast Guides. Steelhead have been averaging 5-6 pounds. A few salmon are still being caught. Bait anglers are using jigs tipped with sand shrimp fished under a bobber.
Puyallup: A few fish were being caught before river levels rose to more than 16,000 cubic feet per second on Wednesday.
Skokomish: The action for chum earlier in the week was very good. The trick is to legally hook a fish, according to online reports. As of Friday morning, the river was about twice as high as normal.
Yakima: The upper river is in better shape in terms of water clarity, according to a staffer at The Evening Hatch. Fly anglers need to be ready with midge and baetis patterns.
SALT WATER
Beaches: Long Beach, Twin Harbors and Mocrocks are open today for a clam dig. No digging is allowed before noon. The evening low tide is -1.8 feet at 7:14 p.m. Be wary of large waves, which could make for dangerous digging.
North Sound: The beaches on the west side of Whidbey Island should see an increase in action for winter-run steelhead, said Mike Chamberlain of Ted’s Sports Center. This would be a good option if river levels stay high over the weekend. Possession Bar has been a good spot for blackmouth fishing.
Tacoma: Few people have been fishing lately, but those who are have caught some nice blackmouth, said Tom Pollack of Sportco. People are catching salmon weighing as much as 15 pounds. Pollack recommends using small spoons to match the size of the baitfish and fish them close to the bottom. Crabbing is open again, but there have been no reports.
LAKES
Bradley: If you want to take the kids for a quick fishing trip, consider this lake. It has easy access and a nice playground if/when the kids get bored.
Munn: This lake has been producing some brown and rainbow trout. Try using dark-colored leeches or Woolly Buggers.
Spanaway: Still-fishing the south end with Power Bait fished close to the bottom has been producing some trout. Fly anglers also are having some success with Woolly Buggers trolled slowly.
Spencer: This lake might be an option for trout. It has been planted with 4,500 rainbows in the past month. Dough baits and worms will work best.
