SQUALICUM
STORM
Coach: Mark Wright (first season)
Last Year: Finished seventh in the Class 2A NWC standings with a conference record of 4-9. Did not qualify for postseason and finished 5-15 overall. Sarah Stackhouse was an All-Whatcom County selection.
Players to watch: Meghan Lowry (So., G), Jessica Greene (Jr., F), Janna Poradun (Jr., P), Lauren Eckert (So., G)
Outlook: The Storm endured a significant makeover during the offseason. On top of Squalicum enlisting Mark Wright to coach the girls' basketball team, the Storm lost its leading scorer in Sarah Stackhouse (15.1 points per game last year), as Stackhouse moved to Georgia to attend school. However, despite losing Stackhouse and having a team with no seniors, Wright is pleased with the effort he has seen and believes guard Meghan Lowry (0.9) and forward Jessica Greene (0.9) have the work ethic to develop into leaders and strong scoring options. "We are really, really young," Wright said in a phone interview. "We are green as green can get, but there is a ton of enthusiasm and I am grateful for the opportunity. The girls have given me nothing but the best so far. (The girls) understand where they are at, and I don't think it will take us as long as we think (to get going)." Wright is also looking for contribution from sophomore guard Lauren Eckert, who Wright said handles the ball well and is quick and explosive.
