Windblown sailboat causes small oil spill in Bellingham Bay

BELLINGHAM - The state Department of Ecology had to clean up a small oil spill Tuesday, Nov. 22, after a leaking sailboat washed ashore in Bellingham Bay.

The boat washed up on the beach at the Cornwall Avenue Landfill cleanup site north of Boulevard Park, along with another sailboat that had no fuel on board. Both likely broke free from their anchors and were dragged there during Monday night's windstorm.

Department of Ecology workers placed absorbent pads in the cabin of the boat and removed any hazardous materials.

Boat owners are responsible for removing or salvaging their boats.
