LETTER: Training available to deal with child abuse

The recent debacle of Penn State's handling of allegations of sexual misconduct within its football department is a tragedy regarding the young children who could have been protected. It is also a reminder that leadership steps must be taken to protect the integrity of sports institutions.

Darkness to Light Stewards of Children is a nationally recognized 2.5-hour child sexual abuse prevention training that has research showing its ability to teach professionals and citizens basic skills that are proven to prevent an average of 10 incidents of sexual misconduct directed toward a child.

I am confident that if administrators, coaches and athletes at Penn State had received this training those child victims could have been protected and the integrity of the institution preserved.

Brigid Collins Family Support Center is the authorized trainer for Stewards of Children in Whatcom and Skagit County and has trained more than 800 individuals in the past 18 months along with people from the Mount Baker School District, Nooksack Indian Tribe, Boys & Girls Club, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and churches and community groups.

With proactive policies and training, you can protect children and your organization. For information contact Brigid Collins Family Support Center at 360-734-4616 ext. 12.
